Sandy Beach is Puerto Peñasco’s resort strip: wide, walkable, almost-flat sand on the Sea of Cortez, about four hours from Phoenix. Every “hotel” here is really privately owned condos — full kitchens, balconies, the works — so the building you choose matters as much as the unit.

Start with who is coming. A slide-obsessed family and a quiet-anniversary couple should not be in the same tower.

Sonoran Sea

The one people mean when they say “Sandy Beach.”

East and West towers, 228 condos, and a front-row seat on the most walkable stretch of sand in Rocky Point. Two oceanfront pools, a swim-up bar, a mini-mart, and sunsets that make strangers clink plastic cups. Built in 2004, it is still the most-rented address on the beach — not because it is the newest, but because it is the easiest weekend to explain to a group text.

Las Palomas

A small city that happens to have a beach.

The largest resort in Puerto Peñasco: roughly 800 condos, an 18-hole championship course through the dunes, infinity pools, a lazy river, splash zones, and enough restaurants that some guests never leave the gates. Buildings like Cristal sit right over the sand; others look over fairways. Bring the reunion. Bring the golf clubs. Bring the cousins who will live in the kids’ pool.

Good for
Multi-generation families, golfers, and anyone who wants a self-contained resort week.
Skip if
You prefer a boutique tower you can learn in an afternoon. This campus is big on purpose.

Sandy Beach’s low-density answer to the high-rise pile-up. Five curved towers plus beach villas were aimed so almost every balcony actually sees water. Zero-edge pools, stone paths, gardens, and ground-floor homes with their own plunge pools. If your vacation soundtrack is ice in a glass — not a swim-up playlist — this is the address.

First condo tower on this beach, late 1990s, and it still feels like someone’s favorite family place rather than a brochure. Three pools, BBQs, volleyball, a clubhouse gym. Interiors swing wildly — original 2003 furniture in one unit, a full remodel next door — so trust the listing photos. You are closer to everyday Rocky Point (shops, tacos, a grocery run) than the far-east towers.

Closest to the sand — and to the banana boats.

Third of the Sonoran resorts (2005), with East and West towers pulled in tight to the water. Two big pools, jacuzzis, a beachfront restaurant, and the kind of shoreline where ATVs and banana boats actually get used. A sweet spot between “lively” and “we still sleep.” Snowbirds like the layouts; families like that the beach is not a hike.

It is less of a skyline statement than the Sonoran towers and more of a “the kids will be wet until dinner” campus. Parents get a taco stand and a real spa; kids get the slide.

Encantame Towers

The glass towers everyone photos. Different beach.

Three 24-story towers — Velero, Verano, and Viento — are the tallest buildings in Sonora, about a 15-minute drive east of the Sandy Beach strip. The sand here is Playa Encanto: quieter, less walk-to-taco, more “we packed the resort.” Five pools, lazy rivers, waterslides, a swim-up aqua bar, sunken firepits, and adults-only rooftop sky pools (21+) with the kind of view that ends group chats. Sister campus Encantame Soleil is rising next door. If a friend sent you a photo of glass high-rises and you could not find them in the list above, this is why.

Families who want slides plus an adults-only rooftop, luxury seekers, and anyone who prefers a quieter beach than the Sandy Beach promenade.
Skip if
You want to stroll building-to-building on Sandy Beach, hop between swim-up bars, or stay in the middle of the action. Encantame is not on that beach.

Sonoran Star is also on the way, between Playa Bonita and Las Gaviotas on Sandy Beach. Smaller pockets on the Sandy Beach corridor — Puerto Privada, Bell Rock Sanctuary, Costa Diamante addresses — are quieter and less “resort brochure.”
